Marcus Barnett and Philip Nixon caught the judge's eye at Chelsea last year and won a gold medal for their graphic black-and-white design for an outdoor gallery.
Barnett - ex-Army, former international management consultant - enrolled at Inchbald School of Design where he met Nixon.
"We were both ambitious. We said: 'Let's have a crack at Chelsea.'" And it's certainly paid off for the pair. Now, both have their own design consultancies but join forces again for big projects such as the Savills Garden at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.
